Lina has about as much depth and distinctiveness as a videogame hero. Ronan - the tragic tattletale of Atonement - holds the camera, and her eyes are amazing, but there's not much for audiences to hang their emotions on. City of Ember's titular star feels like a real "character," much as the house in his animated Monster House creaked and quaked with life.Īlas, City of Ember's human denizens are less fully formed. With elements of Fritz Lang's Metropolis and Marc Caro's and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's City of Lost Children, Kenan's film, then, looks wonderful. The people wear woolly, hippie-esque garb, and the machinery that keeps everything (sort of) running has a rusted, Rube Goldberg kookiness to it. The city, with its cobbled maze of streets and squares and its patched-up infrastructure, exudes a magical, albeit crumbling, charm. Doon and Lina followed what it said, and it might just be the way out of Ember to a different city.Much care has gone into the look of City of Ember. It took them a few weeks to discover what the paper means, and they also find out Mayor Cole’s secret. When Lina showed the paper to Doon, they started trying to figure out what it said. One day Lina and Doon ran into each other, and Lina told Doon that she found something that might be important. Doon soon realized that he had no idea how to fix the generator and lost hope. Some words were missing because Poppy ate them, so Lina saved it to show it to someone who might know what it is. Lina went to see what it was as her grandmother was still looking for something, and Lina noticed that the paper that poppy was chewing on looked important so she took it away. Poppy had found a box that was opened and started eating the paper inside of it. Linas grandmother was looking for something lost one day and was throwing things out of the closet. The generator is located down in the pipeworks and Doon believes that he could save ember by doing something to the generator. He couldn’t save ember by being a messenger, so he asked Lina to trade jobs with him. Doon was upset because he knew it was only a matter of time until the lights went out on ember forever, and he has an idea to save it. Lina got Pipeworks, and Doongot Messenger. One by one, each student gets a folded piece of paper from the Mayor that has the name of the job they get. The mayor died and the box got lost because nobody knew that it had something important inside of it that might save Ember.Īssignment DayWhen the children turn 12 they are assigned jobs from the mayor (this is a different Mayor…) Mayor Cole goes to the school to give the jobs to the students. The box wouldn’t open because it had a lock on it set for a certain date to open and the Mayor could not get better. The box was locked and one day the seventh Mayor got sick and decided to open the box to see if there was something inside of it that could make him better. The InstructionsA fancy box with something unknown inside of it has been past down to each Mayor for years until it opened. Nobody has ever been to the unknown regions (beyond ember) because it is dark and Ember is the only place with life. It is the only city with light, though the sky is always dark. The City of Ember is running out of supplies that they need to survive. CharectorsLinaDoonClaryMayor ColeThe GuardsPoppyMrs.
